002 — The Painting That Survived

According to its provenance, 002 was recovered from a palace belonging to a family of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, a household known for its deep appreciation of the arts.

The work is believed to have been painted privately by a member of the royal family—not for exhibition or recognition, but from a personal passion for painting. The quiet riverside scene feels unusually intimate, almost like a place remembered or frequently visited rather than a landscape intended for public display.

A subtle signature remains visible in the lower corner, with the same signature appearing on 003, another painting recovered from the palace. Together with their shared provenance and artistic character, the two works are believed to have been painted by the same member of the family.

The painting remained within the palace through the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian world and later survived the upheaval and destruction of the Second World War.
